Yesterday, March 13, 2018 votes were cast in a historic Bond Referendum as part of a special election. When all the votes were in, the $25 million school funding initiative passed handily, with yeas winning the vote 2,241 to 1,458.
We would like to note that while there was a clear division between those who voted, Fair Lawn has some 25,000 or so adults. Not all are eligible to vote and all sorts of circumstances arise, but it is clear from the numbers that a great many did not vote on this important matter.
The Special Bond represents $25 million to be designated to improve and expand Fair Lawn’s growing school district, which has seen an increase of approximately 500 enrolled students over the last 5 years, with another 500 predicted over the next 5.
As we previously wrote in our introduction to the referendum, the proposed initiative includes:
- Expansion of Thomas Jefferson and Memorial Middle Schools
- Moving fifth-graders from the elementary schools to the middle schools
- A total of 14 new classrooms and a multipurpose room at Thomas Jefferson Middle School
- An additional 9 classrooms and a new media center at Memorial Middle School
- Upgrades to the Middle School cafeterias
- Elevators in the Middle Schools
- Air conditioning in the auditoriums of the Middle Schools and High School
Fair lawn currently qualifies of approximately $3.8 million in aid from the State of New Jersey, leaving the remaining $21.2 million to be funded from local taxes.
What comes next? The district will be rolling out plans over the coming weeks and months but we can expect taxes to be reassessed town-wide, with increases coming at every level. It is a more important time than ever to be informed, and The Zamir Group is here to help.
